Commodity
A raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought and sold, such as copper or coffee. Commodities can be up-stream elements of a value chain, and impacts on nature are sometimes accounted for at a commodity level - e.g. SBTN's high impact commodity list. It is implicit that the impact on nature is from the process by which a commodity is produced.
The World Customs Organization’s Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System (or "Harmonized System") includes 5,000 commodity groups, each identified by a six digit code.
